Kehlani is ushering in a new era with “Back and Forth,” a confident, high-energy collaboration featuring Missy Elliott. The track serves as a final preview of her upcoming self-titled album, Kehlani, arriving April 24—coinciding with her 31st birthday.

Blending smooth R&B with an assertive edge, the song finds Kehlani and Elliott trading lines before uniting on the hook: “I ain’t goin’ back and forth tonight/ I’m goin’ out,” delivering a clear message of independence and self-assurance.

The album marks Kehlani’s fifth studio release and follows 2024’s Crash, which included the Grammy-nominated single “After Hours.” Reflecting on her recent work, she emphasized her desire to create music that resonates emotionally and energizes listeners, while also continuing to evolve her artistic identity more than a decade into her career.

Missy Elliott’s appearance adds another standout collaboration to her legacy, following recent features with artists like Skrillex and Anitta, alongside major career milestones including her Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction and national honors.

Beyond new music, Kehlani is set to take the stage at the 2026 Roots Picnic in Philadelphia this May, joining a lineup that includes Erykah Badu, Jay-Z, and Brandy. With “Back and Forth” and her forthcoming album, she’s stepping confidently into her next chapter.
